The family was born in Glen Ellyn,
Illinois, Amy Carlson spent most of her early life in the Chicago area. Amy
resided in Glen Ellyn the city of Illinois, up until she was in junior college.
The family also lived in Middle East, where her parents, Bob (and Barb) taught
at American School. Amy is the older sister of Betsy, Lori, and brother Joe.
Amy has traveled across Europe together with her family and independently.
Because her parents were teachers and teachers, they could spend the entire
summer traveling and camping across the United States. They've camped across
every state, except Alaska. Amy has also traveled to Rwanda after the 1994 war
to aid in relief efforts. Amy was a gifted artist from the beginning when she
was acting in school plays, as well as taking part in writing competitions. In
high school she was a promising athlete who finished in the first ever
3200-meter relay in the Illinois girls track. Following an injury, she went
back to university and played many parts on the stage, starting with Lanford
Wilson's "Fifth Of July” and then directing Wallace Shawn's "Aunt Da
and Lemon. Amy attended Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois where she earned
her with a cum laude, having a B.A. in East Asian history and a concentration
in Theater. Following graduation, she relocated to Chicago where she studied
Improv at the Improv Olympics and Acting at The Actor's Center. Following her
graduation she was offered a contract job on the soap opera Another World
(1964). In the category of "Outstanding support actress on an Daytime
Drama Series", she was nominated for Daytime Emmy Awards. Her most
memorable roles were of strong women as Alex Taylor (1999), Maggie Pistone
(2000), Katie Owen (2003), and Linda Reagan (2003). Carlson lives in New York
City, with Syd Butler as her husband, and is the Bassist of Les Savy Fav. She
also owns Frenchkiss Records, an independent music label, and serves as a
partner in the company. Amy continues to pursue different and unique roles in
the world of film.
