Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth took place on the 24th of August, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater in the daylight. DuVernay instantly became enthralled after showing her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate via artwork. Although DuVernay lived living in Compton with her family, she lived living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historical march of the Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. The DuVernay family visited Selma over the summer months and was in awe of the idea to film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was still in the college. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to watch the home of one member of the jury and examine their junk. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was assigned, DuVernay decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be an intern at a small studio. She was promoted to the position and set up her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. In addition to PR, the company has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotions, like The Urban Beauty Collective.
